Draft Music Video

Below is draft #6 of my music video:

So far I have made 6 drafts of my music video, and I am hoping that my 7th draft will be the final version. I am happy with the video so far however I have a tendency to keep working on the editing, whereas some people would say that once it is finished, you should put it aside and stop going back in and editing it. However, because I am a perfectionist, I am continuing to edit however I do believe it is nearly done.

The good elements of the video include the different locations I have used as well as the fast pace of video. Mostly, however, I am pleased with how clearly the LGBTQ+ storyline and concept has been presented, as when making the music video, I was worried by concept would be clouded however the video is very empowering and rebels against societies standards. This is through how we think at first the girl is holding a boys hand, however, it is slowly revealed that it was a girl's hand. The video is very colourful, almost in juxtaposition to the darkness behind the start and the bridge; this idea of homosexual oppression. I also am pleased with the quality of the shots, and the depth of field i have created so I am glad I used my DSLR camera.

However, to finalise the video, I have been given some improvements from my classmates and teachers, see below:

  • 'I like the pace of the video and it made me feel really proud and empowered towards the end of the video when the story unravels and the couple in the video decide that they are going to be together. I would perhaps add the words 'my my my' on the screen in the part of the song where this is sounded, such as the letters popping up on the screen one by one. Also, perhaps tighten the transitions and make it very tight' - Mia Agar Rea

  • 'The video is amazing, the only thing I would change would be making sure that at 1.05 (second verse), the clip comes in sooner because there is a small delay. Also, go through the video and zoom into the clips so that you can tighten up some of the transitions' - Kitty Ellis Jones

  • 'I'm not sure I like how the video changes shape a lot such as how there is a wider letterbox on some shots and a more narrow letterbox on others, as well as the old film footage which is narrower. I like this technique as it keeps the video interesting an edgy, however it works better with certain shots. Also, I think it changes too often.' - Dylan Lawrence

The above feedback was spoken, however, I received some feedback that was written down on paper as well:

I have taken these improvements in, as well as had a lengthy discussion with my teacher, and the whole class has been given a week to amend their music videos until we hand it in as a finished body of work.

This post was very insightful as I feel like I have watched my video so many times that I have almost become numb to the good and bad elements. It was really refreshing to gather some feedback which came from fresh sets of eyes. I mostly asked people my own age (my target audience) as their opinion is very valid seeing as the video is mostly trying to appeal to people of that age (as well as all other ages). I have watched my video so many times that I have become happy with how it is, however getting other people's feedback has opened my eyes to things that aren't very good with the video that I was unaware of, so I value other people's feedback greatly.
