Location Report
As part of the planning stages of my music video, I have decided to create a 'Location Report'. Before filming my music video, I decided to visit most of the locations to make sure that it would work as a good backdrop and be of easy access. This could be because a place could work in theory yet when I visit the location I could change my mind, such as realising that a place to too small or not enough light gets to it, for example.
This is called a 'recce' and is used a lot in the industry to make sure that locations are perfect for what they want to use it for. Normally professionals in the video will also film parts of the film as a 'mock up', before the footage is reviewed and scrutinised for its effectiveness.
The locations I have visited and will be using are:
The Misbourne School Photography Studio
What I found out - I found out that there were a lot of leads running across the floor which is a trip hazard, however there are also signs that warn people about the leads. I also discovered that one of the bulbs in the soft box had blown so I communicated this with the teacher in hopes that it would be replaced before I need to film. The person who had used the equipment before me had not put it back so I need to make sure that when I film I put everything away and turn everything off. Also because I will be using glitter I need to sweep the studio to keep it tidy and respect the space.
The Misbourne School Grounds
What I found out - The grounds do not really fit with the aesthetic of my video so I need to be selective with which parts I will film at. For example, I could use a brick wall background because it is urban and so will fit with the look of the video however the greenery will not. If I capture any greenery I can always try and edit it with filters to mute the colour. Also, I will be filming here in term time so I need to make sure that any younger students walking around the grounds do not walk into my shots as I do not have permission for them to be on camera from their parents. Also, they may ruin the shots if they are in school uniform as I am trying to make it look as if the character is not in school at the time.
Oxford Street, London
What I found out - Oxford Street wasn't actually as busy/crowded when I went to visit it yet because of past experiences, I am aware that it can get very busy. Especially because Pride will be on, roughly a million people are expected to attend so I need to make sure I get there early so I get a space at the front of the barriers. During Pride, there will be barriers up so I am aiming to stand at the barrier, also, I found out that there was quite a lot of rubbish/bins and other objects that I will try and make sure do not get in shot.
Trafalgar Square, London
What I found out - Trafalgar Square was very similar to Oxford Street in that there will be barriers and it will be very busy. There will be a stage in front of Nelson's Column and this area will be blocked off for people watching the show. This means that I will be limited for space however down the road, the parade continues which is where I will be filming mostly. Also, there is Charring Cross tube station which goes back to Oxford Street. Trafalgar Square will be the last location of the day so we will be very tired. Fortunately, there are lots of shops nearby where I can purchase water. I am also allowed to film here.
Transport For London Tube Trains
What I found out - This may be the hardest location to film at because it very compact and not as many people as there were at Pride, so there will be more attention cast on what I am doing. Also, there is lighting isn't very good, so I plan on sitting right under a light and filming from angles so that there aren't any bad shadows. Going on the tube made me realise that because they are all underground, there is quite moody lighting which I liked and this would well for the bridge of the song.
This post was useful as it allowed me to see the exact locations I will be using as well as pinpoint the dangers and risks I should be aware of that are more specific to a certain area. Doing a location report was worth it as some risks surprised me. For example, I was unaware of some of the risks such as the fact that the main part of Trafalgar Square will be barricaded off which I was previously unaware of.
