Past Candidate's Videos

For this post, I decided to watch some previous students music videos that have completed the same/similar course. I was very impressed with the quality of the videos as well as the concepts and there are definitely elements within them that I will be using as inspiration for my own video.

Firstly, I chose to mention this music video because I was really drawn to the lighting and effects. At first, I was unsure how model had a print over her yet I assume it was done against a white wall and using a projector. A design was probably cast over the model and it would take the shape of the model. I am very tempted to use this technique yet using different designs in my own music video. I also liked the costuming in the video as vintage sunglasses were used which made the video feel retro. However the projections modernised the video so I liked the contrast between old and new.

This video really impressed me in terms of how it was edited. For example, I liked how the titles appeared on the page as well as the font because I thought it looked edgy and brought in this old/new idea. I also thought the glitches used in the editing, such as at 0.08 seconds gave the video a vintage feel so I am likely to use similar techniques to achieve this feel, such as noise to make the visuals look like they are being played on an old TV.
Although it may not be to everyone's taste, I really liked how before the music started, we could hear background noise of birds which abruptly stopped when we cut to a new visual. This is because, as I watched, it kept me interested in the ever-changing scenes used.
Technically, the video was shot very nicely as well making it pleasant and easy to watch. However I felt like the two music videos I have watched so far are cinematically exceptional yet I was definitely hoping to find a video with more of a storyline as I think this is what both videos lacked.

So when I started watching this music video I instantly knew there would be a storyline and more emotion involved so I felt more invested in what the music and visuals were trying to convey. It also helped that the video was based around a gay relationship as it has give me ideas for my own video in terms of storyboarding. For instance, I liked the shots where the main actor is looking at pictures of her supposed girlfriend because it was a more interesting way to tell the audience that instead of just a shot of them together. Involving this type of prop would be good for my music video because photos are such a personal thing so could help make the video more emotional.
One shot that I loved was at 0.42 seconds in, because I love the reflections in the windows because it looks good but also how it symbolises how the world still goes on and starts to accept the LGBT+ community.
I also like the shots of them in the record shop, especially of the two girls being seen through the shelf, conveying how they are hiding from society.
Finally I like the cyclical narrative created by both starting and ending with the record player as it can convey a lot such as being stuck in the same situation of feeling unaccepted. Alternatively it could suggest how they are going to physically end being ashamed (turning off the turntable).

When reading the comments of this video there were quite a few negative ones, such as it could be more 'creative'. However I like the simplicity of it's editing as again it gives that vintage feel. I specifically like when the shot is framed by a letter because action goes on outside of frame which as the audience we have to imagine. Nonetheless, I definitely understand that the video doesn't really have a climax and the 'story' is the same the whole way through, meaning I found I became disinterested quickly. Therefore I will probably use similar editing techniques to this video yet have much more of a storyline in my video.

I like this video again because of it's editing. The frame is much smaller than normal, which leaves a black border around the outside which I personally like because it is unique and retro. The visuals are interesting and clips are usually not repeated more than once which I felt made the video much more engaging. I also liked when the music stopped at 1.08 seconds because this also was intriguing and made us as an audience want to continue watching.
One thing that I would prefer my video to have would be a faster pace because it became quite slow in places.

Watching the music videos that have been created by students in the past for this course has been very eye-opening as it has allowed me to see what standards of videos are given which grades. This had definitely motivated me to work hard to combine all of the element of a music video in order for the video to be cohesive, as well as inspired me because of the amazing videos, including editing techniques, storylines and aesthetics I have seen. I have also picked up techniques I would have never thought of myself so I will definitely be watching more student-made music videos in order to pick up new skills that I could bring to my own music video.

My next post will be all about the casting process for the characters in my music video!

    1. Thank you for your comment! I think the videos I have looked at have all inspired me looks wise, so the one that really stuck out to me was the video for 'Supercut' because of its impactful storyline which really resonates which the audience. I hope to, however achieve a good balance between aesthetic and narrative qualities.
