Target Market - Music Genre

Genre of music

In order to start thinking about my own music video, I firstly made a powerpoint presentation as part of a pair in which we presented to the class. Each pair was given a music genre and we were asked to present about pop music videos. From this I learnt a lot such as the traditional conventions of stereotypical pop music video, such as 'mise en scene' including how lighting and props are used. This was all useful knowledge because if I were to produce a music video with a pop genre, I could try and include some of the vital ingredients needed. We then briefly analysed the music video for Dua Lipa's 'New Rules', to explore how her video follows the traditional conventions of a pop music video and how in some ways it doesn't and branches off this stereotype.

This is our presentation as well as a photo of us presenting it:

To gather research about what my target market like in a music video I created the survey below on Google Drive, which I posted on via a link on Facebook for my friends to see. From this I managed to get 45 responses which made for a fair and balanced representation of the public. I will analyse my results below.

Here are my responses to my survey:

Firstly, I asked for the age of the participant, and 67% of participants were aged 11-20. This is roughly my target market for my music video so from this, we can assume that because 44% of participants preferred genre is pop, most 11-20 years olds preferred pop.
As well as this, 75% of participants were female meaning most of the pop's percentage was taken by females. I want my music video to be enjoyed by any gender so I can see from my research I will need to perhaps try and make my music video more enjoyable to the male audience.
For the next question, the answers were more varied, yet most participants said that their favourite style of music video is 'artistic' at 33% as well as 'fun' at 22%, which is something I will consider when start to plan my music video.
Finally, I asked participants to suggest some of their favourite music videos. I received 80 suggestions ranging from Taylor Swift to Bruno Mars. I will watch as many of these videos as I can to gain inspiration.

  1. Great research on your target market. To improve do you think you could comment on different genres of music that you could use for your music videos.

  2. Thanks Mia! I could have explored different genres and have done below:

Rap music began to develop in the 1970s. Typically with this style, the background consists of a beat over which a fast, rhyming style of speaking is played. The target market of the genre is teenagers up until early 20's, and there is quite a balance of males and females that listen to it. Usually in a music video that is the genre of rap, urban clothing is worn as well as jewellery to show off wealth.

Another genre of music is 'Hip Hop' which started in the United States. A wider range of people listen to hip-hop over rap, from teenagers up until almost middle aged. Often in the music videos, we see a lot of wealth as well as colourful clothes and props such as iPhones.

Finally, there is a genre called 'Alternative'. This is a style of rock music with usually a slightly younger target market, which emerged from the independent music underground in the 1980's. Music videos of this genre would most likely include the artist wearing loose fitted clothes, and the video will have a carefree feel. In terms of setting, a music video of this genre would typically be shot in an urban, grungy area.
